Over 100 teams will compete in 23 divisions of 3 on 3 basketball on Saturday, March 20 (8am-8pm) and Sunday, March 21 (12-6pm). This is the 6th year that the Groton Dunstable Youth Basketball League has run "Hoops on Fire", and this year's tournament is shaping up to be the biggest and best yet. Proceeds from this event will help GDYBL continue funding the Freshman basketball program at GDRHS.
Games will take place at Lawrence Academy (26 Powderhouse Rd) and Groton Dunstable Regional High School (703 Chicopee Row) in Groton, MA. With 8 fast-paced, half-court games running simultaneously, and free throw and 3 point competitions mixed in during the championship rounds on Sunday, it promises to be an exciting event for all who attend. Admission is free and open to all basketball fans.
In addition to Groton and Dunstable, teams from Pepperell, Westford, Townsend, Lunenburg, Tyngsboro, Acton, Littleton, Athol, Lancaster, Leominster, Bedford, and Mont Vernon have registered to compete at travel, recreational, and adult levels. Players range in age from 4th grade to "over 40." Every team will play at least three games on Saturday. Teams with the best records will play additional games on Sunday, with trophies going to the first and second place teams in all divisions. Trophies will also be awarded to the winners of the free throw and 3-point competitions, which are open to all registered youth players.
The tournament could not be run without the support of local sponsors, including Decoteau Orthodontics, Southcoast Development, Crusader Basketball Camp, Hudson Trophy Company, Sara Behn Basketball Camp, and Moison Ace Hardware.
